Ford and Renault Expand EV Collaboration Amid European Market Pressures
Ford Motor Company is deepening its partnership with Renault to develop affordable electric vehicles for the European market, leveraging Renault's Ampere platform to cut production costs. The collaboration targets two new city car models slated for release by 2028, designed to address urban mobility needs while maintaining Ford's brand identity.
The MOVE comes as Ford grapples with declining sales and market share in Europe, having already reduced its workforce by 5,000 since late 2024. The automaker's Puma Gen-E launch earlier this year failed to stem the tide, prompting a strategic pivot toward budget-friendly EVs to compete with subsidized Chinese imports and regional rivals.
Renault's Ampere platform emerges as a linchpin in this effort, promising to streamline manufacturing expenses for compact EVs. Simultaneously, European cities are accelerating charging infrastructure deployment, creating favorable conditions for EV adoption.
